Important Note

Allen Laboratory Test

When "Type and Hold" is ordered, a pilot tube is collected so that a sample of blood is available should testing be required. No testing is performed. If blood for transfusion is needed, the Blood Bank should be called and the “BLOOD TO BE KEPT ON HOLD- AMH ONLY” message should be ordered in the HIS. Do not order a crossmatch. Notes: 1) Blood Availability: Blood will be available in approximately 55 minutes if Type and Crossmatch is then ordered provided patient has had Type and Hold within 48 hours and patient has no unexpected antibodies.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred Collection Container: EDTA pink top tube

Acceptable Collection Container: EDTA purple top tube

Collect: One 6mL EDTA pink top tube labeled appropriately.

Labeling guidelines:

Allen in-patient or out-patient with armband: Label specimen with sunquest cart printed label scanned at the bedside or hand written orange label completed at patient bedside.

Allen out-patient without armband, without plans for transfusion and surgery >3 days: Label specimen with preprinted sunquest label, chart label, or hand written label (not orange label). 

Note: If >24 hours for specimen to arrive at the lab, separate plasma from red cells and send both tubes labeled appropriately refrigerated.
