Specimen Requirements
Capillary glucose is a method for determination of whole blood glucose using 1 drop of blood from capillary puncture of the finger (heel in newborns). Repeat testing is required for any “LO” or HI” value. If a critical result does not fit the clinical picture of the patient, then a repeat test is advised. A lab draw (venipuncture) is required when the following criteria are met: 1) “LO” value (less than 10mg/dl) after repeat Nova Stat Strip Glucose. 2) “HI” value (greater than 600mg/dl) after repeat Nova Stat Strip Glucose. Notes: • No effect was found at 20% to 70% hematocrit.
