Collection Information:
Acceptable Specimens: Body fluids, bone marrow, bronchoscopy, draining wounds (excision biopsy), gastric aspirate, spinal fluid, sputum or tracheal aspirate, tissue (incision or biopsy), or urine. ESwab is the only acceptable swab specimen (Each Acid Fast Culture must have it's own ESwab. Do not add on with other tests). NOTE: if there is a delay in transport to the lab, specimen should be kept refrigerated until transport. Specimens must be received within 3 days of collection to be acceptable.
Remarks:
For urine specimens: Collect 1 specimen each day for 3 consecutive days. Submit atleast 40mL from the first-morning void in a screw-capped, sterile container.

Methodology
Organism Identification is performed by biochemical test and/or Bruker MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry RUO Database. Organism sensitivities (AST) are performed as applicable using Broth Microdilution and/or Gradient diffusion strips using FDA approved methodology and CLSI guidelines. Performance has been evaluated and verified by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, Pathology Laboratory.
