Specimen Requirements
Container/Tube Type:
BD Bactec Myco/F Lytic Culture Vial 
Collection Information:
Contact laboratory prior to collection for BD Bactec Myco/F Lytic Culture Vial. Disinfect the top of the tube stopper with 70% isopropyl alcohol wipe prior to collection.
Patient preparation: Clean venipuncture site with Chloraprep swab for 15 seconds. Allow to dry for 30 seconds. The site must be dry before performing the venipuncture. Do not touch the site with any non-sterile object.
Collection Volume:
Optimal Volume: 3.0 mL - 5.0 mL
* Collecting the optimal volume significantly increases the recovery rate
Minimum Sample Volume:
Minimum difficult adult draw and pediatric: 1.0 mL

Unacceptable Conditions
Clotted, improper container or Does not meet collection, storage or transport requirements. No more than 3 blood cultures will be accepted per patient per 24-hour period unless authorized by Microbiology Manager, Pathologist, or Director of Laboratory Services

Methodology
Organism Identification is performed by biochemical test and/or Bruker MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry RUO Database. Organism sensitivities (AST) are performed as applicable using Broth Microdilution and/or Gradient diffusion strips using FDA approved methodology and CLSI guidelines. Performance has been evaluated and verified by UnityPoint Health - Des Moines, Pathology Laboratory.
