Creatine Kinase (CK) is an enzyme that is associated with ATP regeneration in contractile or transport systems. Its predominant physiologic function occurs in muscle cells, where it is involved in the storage of high-energy creatine phosphate. CK is widely distributed in tissues, with highest activities found in skeletal muscle, heart muscle, and the brain. Little is found in liver or RBC. CK is considered the most sensitive indicator in acute myocardial infarction (AMI) and muscular dystrophy, particularly Duchenne muscular dystrophy. Increased CK levels may be seen in: a. Myocardial infarction (rises within 4-6 hours and declines to normal within 24-36 hours), b. Skeletal muscle disorders (Muscular dystrophy and Polymyositis), c. Hypothyroidism, d. Physical activity, e. Myocardial injury (Ischemia, Angina, Cardiac), surgery) f. Reye's syndrome, g. Carbon monoxide poisoning, h. CNS shock, i. Seizures, j. Acute and chronic renal failure.
