Order LAB4638, include the following information: date of last menstrual period, date of collection, indication of previous abnormal report, and indicate if reflex HPV test on ASC-US or HPV co-test should be performed.
Specimen Requirements
Must have patient's name and birthdate on vial.
A Rover’s Cervex-Brush is used to sample the cervix and external os. Proper collection must be 5 complete revolutions to the right. The brush must be sent to the lab in the Surepath vial. Separate spatula and brush with detachable heads are available upon request.
Indicate when ordered if reflex HPV test on ASC-US diagnosis or HPV co-test should be performed.
Stability/Transport
Place the brush immediately in the vial.
Cytology testing must be completed within 28 days of the collection date.
HPV testing must be completed within 14 days of the collection date.

Useful For
Screening test for cervical neoplasia. Squamous cell carcinoma is believed to develop in progressive stages from normal through pre-cancerous (dysplastic, intraepithelial neoplastic, stages II in situ carcinoma, and eventually invasive carcinoma). This sequence is felt to develop over a matter of years in most patients. The etiology of cervical carcinoma is unknown but the disease is felt to be related to sexual activity and possibly sexually transmitted viral infections such as human papilloma virus (HPV). Most cervical carcinomas and pre-cancerous conditions occur in the transformation zone (squamo-columnar junction), therefore, this area needs to be sampled if optimum results are to be obtained. Notes: On pregnant and hysterectomy patients, use the Rover’s Cervex-Brush in a painting motion to collect cells, then deposit it into the vial.
