Preferred Collection Container: green top lithium heparin tube, SST 

Also Acceptable Collection Container: serum red top tube or EDTA purple top tube

Collection Information:

Collect 0.5 mL of Lithium heparinized plasma or serum.

Serum or plasma must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection.

Useful For

Follicle Stimulating Hormone (FSH) determinations are useful for the prediction of ovulation, in the evaluation of infertility, and the diagnosis of pituitary and gonadal disorders. Gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GNRH) from the hypothalamus controls the secretion of the gonadotropins FSH and LH from the anterior pituitary. FSH appears to control gametogenesis in both males and females. Notes: 1)FSH and LH are increased in: a. Primary gonadal failure b.Complete testicular feminization syndrome c.Precocious puberty 2)FSH and LH are decreased in: a. Failure of pituitary b. Failure of the hypothalamus
