Specimen Requirements
Preferred Collection Container: green top lithium heparin tube, SST
Also Acceptable Collection Container: serum red top tube or EDTA purple top tube
Collection Information:
Collect 1.5 mL of Lithium heparinized plasma or serum.
Serum or plasma must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection.

Useful For
HBsAg is the first serologic marker appearing in the serum 6-16 weeks following hepatitis B viral infection. In acute cases, HBsAg usually disappears 1-2 months after the onset of symptoms. Persistence of HBsAg for more than six months indicates development of either a chronic carrier state or chronic liver disease. Notes: 1)Positive HBsAg result is diagnostic of acute or chronic hepatitis B infection. 2)Presence of HBsAg is frequently associated with infectivity. 3)Positive HBsAg with positive HBeAg almost always indicates infectivity. 4)Test is not useful during the "window" period (disappearance of HBsAg and prior to the appearance of anti-HBs)
