Specimen Requirements

Tissue from products of conception should be preserved as soon as possible upon removal. Specimens from within the hospital should be immediately transported to the histology department. The tissue is placed in 10% formalin upon collection unless Chromosomal (Genetic) studies are requested. If chromosomal studies requested do NOT place in formalin, notify Histology (or main lab after hours) to ensure proper specimen handling of fresh specimen. The containers must be properly labeled. The label needs to include two identifiers as well as written contents of container.

If chromosome studies are wanted: 3mL EDTA Lav and 4mL Sodium Heparin whole blood must be collected from mother and sent with fetal tissue to complete CMAPCM and PPAP testing for Chromosomal Mircoarray.
