Important Note

Allen Laboratory Test

When this is ordered, the patient is typed, screened for any unexpected antibodies, and the number of units requested are crossmatched so that in the event of necessary transfusion blood is immediately available.

Analytical time will be greater than 3 hours if the patient has red cell antibodies present.

Blood will only be held for 24 hours after the time specified. If blood is to be held longer, nursing unit needs to notify Blood Bank.

Blood Availability: Blood is immediately available if Type and Crossmatch has been ordered within 24 hours. If additional units are needed, blood will be available within 20 minutes unless patient has unexpected antibodies or a rare blood type.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred Collection Container: EDTA pink top tube

Acceptable Collection Container: EDTA purple top tube

Collect: One 6mL EDTA pink top tube labeled appropriately.

Labeling guidelines:

Allen in-patient or out-patient with armband: Label specimen with sunquest cart printed label scanned at the bedside or hand written orange label completed at patient bedside.

Allen out-patient without armband, without plans for transfusion and surgery >3 days: Label specimen with preprinted sunquest label, chart label, or hand written label (not orange label). 

Note: If >24 hours for specimen to arrive at the lab, separate plasma from red cells and send both tubes labeled appropriately refrigerated.
