Preferred Collection Container: green top lithium heparin tube
Also Acceptable Collection Container: serum red top tube, SST, or EDTA purple top tube @ Allen
Collection Information:
Collect 1.0 mL of Lithium heparinized plasma.
Serum or plasma must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection.

Allen:
Adults: <0.1 ng/mL
Neonates: <2 ng/mL at birth, rises to <20 ng/mL at 18-30 hours, then falls to adult level by 72 hours.
Early (<6 hours) or localized infections may not show significant procalcitonin elevations. Elevations in procalicitonin may be seen in settings other than bacterial infections, including major trauma or sugery, severe burns, and severe/prolonged cariogenic shock or organ hypoperfusion.
