Important Note

If the patient is non-fasting: - Explain to the patient their doctor requested the labs to be done fasting. - Apologize for the inconvenience and ask if they can return another day fasting. - If they are unable to return, call the provider to see if the order can be changed to a 'non-fasting' order.

Specimen Requirements

Collect: 1.0mL of Lithium heparinized plasma or serum from fasting patient.

Serum or plasma must be separated from cells within 2 hours of collection.

 If drawn in a STT tube and specimen will not be delivered to the lab the same day of collection, serum must be poured off into an aliquot tube.
