Important Note

Allen Laboratory Test

This test is for RhoGam to be administered to Rh(D) negative mothers who have delivered a Rh(D) positive baby. It should be given within 72 hours of delivery. 

Test includes: ABORH & Fetalscreen. Fetalscreen is done to detect the amount of fetal cells in the maternal circulation. Fetal screen should give negative results if less than 0.1% (2.5 ml) fetal red cells in maternal circulation. If fetal screen is positive, the fetal hemoglobin - Kleihauer Betke will be performed also.

Specimen Requirements

Preferred Collection Container: EDTA pink top tube

Acceptable Collection Container: EDTA purple top tube

Collect: One 6mL EDTA pink top tube labeled appropriately.

Labeling guidelines:

Allen in-patient or out-patient with armband: Label specimen with sunquest cart printed label scanned at the bedside or hand written orange label completed at patient bedside.

Allen out-patient without armband, without plans for transfusion and surgery >3 days: Label specimen with preprinted sunquest label, chart label, or hand written label (not orange label). 

Note: If >24 hours for specimen to arrive at the lab, separate plasma from red cells and send both tubes labeled appropriately refrigerated.

Useful For

RhoGam is an antibody (Anti-D) which binds any Rh positive fetal cells in the maternal circulation, thereby preventing maternal antibody production. One vial of RhoGam will suppress the immune response to 15 ml of Rh positive red blood cells (30 ml of whole blood).
