Specimen Requirements
Collect 20mL whole blood introduced into sterile nutrient broth (10mL into aerobic bottle and 10mL into anaerobic bottle using aseptic technique). It is advisable that 2 sets of blood cultures be drawn (same time, different sites).
For < 2 years of age, collect 0.5mL to 3mL whole blood drawn with butterfly directly into peds bottle.
Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Fluorometric Detection of CO2. CO2 indicates growth in broth culture bottle.

If blood culture is postive, PCR is performed, if appropriate. Positive Cultures are sent to St. Luke's Hospital for testing.
