Specimen Requirements

Acceptable Specimens:

Rectal Swab with no visible stool

 

Unacceptable Specimens:

Any specimen other than rectal

 

1.  Collect specimen as instructed by the Microbiology Lab.

2.  Maintain sterility and forward promptly

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Swab is stable for 24 hours at room temperature.

Methodology

Culture by Conventional Method to Specifically Isolate and Identify Enterobacteriaceae that are Carbapenemase Producers (Resistant to the Carbapenem class of antibiotics).

Note: If CRE is detected, infection prevention will be notified and inpatients will be isolated.
