This test should only be ordered in conjunction with an Infection Prevention Consultation.

Acceptable specimens:

Specimens other than Rectal Swabs for routine screening.

Unacceptable specimens:

Routine rectal screening identified by Infection Prevention

1. Collect specimen as instructed by the Microbiology Lab.

2. Maintain sterility and forward promptly

Note: Indicate specimen source on specimen container and in computer.

Transport at room temperature. Stable for 24 hours.

Culture by Conventional Method to Specifically Isolate and Identify Enterococcus species that are resistant to Vancomycin.

Note: If VRE is detected, infection prevention will be notified and inpatients will be isolated.
