Important Note

Allen Laboratory Test

1. Orders for Urinalysis/Urine Culture will be placed through a panel instead of individual orders. The order is driven through the patient type/identification.

2. If urinalysis with reflex is ordered, the results will reflex to microscopic ONLY if one of the following criteria is indicated on the macroscopic results. a) blood, urine is positive b) leukocytes, urine is positive c) nitrite, urine is positive d) protein, urine is greater than or equal to 30mg/dL.

3. If urinalysis with reflex is ordered, the culture will reflex ONLY if the WBC is >10 on the microscopic review.

Specimen Requirements

Collect 15 ml random urine (First morning specimen is preferred). Midstream clean catch specimens are the most common urine culture specimens. Other methods may be considered according to patient comfort, ability to void and risk of infection. When infection is suspected consider changing existing indwelling catheters prior to obtaining urine specimens.
